SEE: Sugar's not making SA sweet

'More regrettable than the HIV scourge'

Recently. on World Diabetes Day, South Africans did not have much to celebrate. With 10 000 new diabetes cases analyzed each month, we are suffocating in sugar – a standout amongst the most open, reasonable and addictive of sustenances.

This is Melanie's account of losing her leg to diabetes, described by Dr Luvhengo, the Head of Surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. This, he says, is a wellbeing emergency more awful than the HIV plague. "Sugar wouldn't make this nation sweet. We are maturing this sugar...it will be astringent for every one of us."
